Short Sword in Sheath Mbeeli Ya Phoko
Yaka / Suku, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, leather, vegetal fiber
Early-mid 20th century
The Yaka, who enjoy the reputation of being robust warriors, developed this unique and functional sword. There is typically not much decoration on the blade, but the handle can be quite artistically designed, often with the distinct openwork seen here.
The Yaka (who number 300,000) and the Suku (who number 80,000) live primarily in western D.R. Congo, with some of the Yaka spilling into Angola. Both cultures believe in Nzambi, the creator of good and evil. Their economies are supported by hunting, fishing, and farming (Felix, 100 Peoples of Zaire and Their Sculpture, 1987; Felix & GE, Fatal Beauty: Traditional Weapons from Central Africa, 2009; Fischer & Zirngibl, Afrikanische Waffen, 1978).
