Knives of this type, with handles often carved in the form of a seated figure, were reportedly used in circumcision ceremonies. The leather sheaths were generally made by the Mandingo (Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984; Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
