Ceremonial Axe
Ngbandi / Sango / Yakoma, Central African Republic / D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, copper
Early 20th century
Small axes of this type had no functional use, and were only used ceremonially. Similar axes were also found among the Mbanja and Banda. Unfortunately, scant information about their meaning is known but one report describes that these axes were held by high dignitaries of the Yakoma at festivals during the harvest dance (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003; Zirngibl & Kubetz, panga na visu, 2009).
