Copper Sickle Blade
Boa / Mongelima, D.R. Congo
Copper, wood
Early 20th century
This copper sickle blade is a distant relative of the famous sickle blades of the Mangbetu. Known as Trumbash, Mambele, Nambele, and Dupa, this piece was used by the Boa and Mongelima, and possibly also the Lokele and more broadly, the Mongo. The blade was an important mark of prestige that was prominently displayed during important gatherings and ceremonial occasions (Elsen, Tribal Arms Monographs Vol. 1 Nº3 , 1997).
