Pair of Ceremonial Axes Mànzhi
Fali / Kapsiki / Margi, Nigeria
Brass
Early 20th century
This solid-brass axe known as Mànzhi was used ceremonially, and was the prerogative of the Bana, Fali, Kapsiki, and Margi. The shaft and blade of the axe were cast in one piece, and there was no special shafting. Other examples were made of iron or aluminum (Wente-Lukas, Die materielle Kultur der nicht-islamischen Ethnien von Nordkamerun und Nordostnigeria, 1977).
