Grooved Short Sword in Scabbard
Nkundu / Konda / Ntomba / Kote, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, brass, zinc
Early 20th century
This short sword was the prerogative of a number of Western Mongo cultures who lived in the equatorial forests of central D.R. Congo. Often, the handles and scabbards were covered in brass upholstery tacks and other decorative elements (Zirngibl & Kubetz, panga na visu, 2009).
While the scabbard on this example is damaged, the grooved designs on the blade are outstanding for this type.
