Elaborately Decorated Slot Axe
Bornu / Hausa / Fulbe, Nigeria
Iron, wood
Late 19th / early 20th century
This slot axe is closely related to Barantame axes from the Bornu Emirate for its forward leaning head and for its large, flaring blade that is lavishly embellished on both sides (and easily removable). However, it also shares similarities with slot axes from the Hausa and Fulbe for the undulating shape of the handle, and the lavish geometric decorations carved into it.
