Ceremonial Axe
Dan / Kran / Ngéré / Baule, Liberia / Ivory Coast
Iron, wood
Early 20th century
Small axes of this type were used ceremonially in Liberia and Ivory Coast. Carried in the hand or over the shoulder during festivities and dances, they represented a badge of authority. Other cultures reportedly used such axes, including the Aitu, Faafue, Nanafue, Nzipri, Sa Tikran, Sundo, and Warebo. Typical of the type, much attention is given to making the handle impressive and ornamental, yet the blade is quite plain (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003; Zirngibl & Kubetz, panga na visu, 2009).
In the fourth photo, you can see how the carving on the head of the axe resembles a curved sword from Liberia.
