Prestige / Throwing Knife Musri
Masalit, Sudan
Iron
Early 20th century
This musri knife follows the prescribed formula to which large reverse "F-shaped" knives adhere, but then a sapling sprouts from the top that mimics the form of its parent. This small detail is quite uncommon and gives the blade a much more ornate appearance than common examples.
This is only the second example of this type of which I am aware. The other was published in Mestdagh & Louis, Couteaux de Jet. Ou la collection d’un peintre, 2003 and Rider, 100 African Blades (vol. 1), 2021, plate 12.
