Miniature Slot Axe
Luguru / Zaramo / Kwere, Tanzania
Iron, wood
Early 20th century
The slot axe (with the blade carried through the shaft) occurs throughout East Africa, from Lake Victoria to the Zambezi River. It can be difficult to assign these axes to a specific region or culture.
This piece is a miniature; surely a purely symbolic piece. It is not clear if it was a toy for a child or a personal object that held some representational power. However, the wood is thoroughly oxidized from age and the blade was forged with traditional techniques.
