Dagger in Sheath
Himba, Namibia
Iron, leather, wood, brass, copper, sinew
Early 20th century
This is the oldest example of this rare type that I have encountered. The original ensemble would have included an iron tool / poker inserted into the sheath in front of the blade.
The Himba are an indigenous people with an estimated population of 50,000. They are semi-nomadic as they have base homesteads where crops are cultivated, but may have to move within the year depending on rainfall and where there is access to water. They are considered the last semi-nomadic people of Namibia ("Himba People," Wikipedia, 2022).
