Currency Blade in the Shape of a Throwing Knife
Possibly Benge or Ngombe, Central African Republic / D.R. Congo
Iron
19th century
This is an exceedingly rare type, of which I am aware of only one other example. An analysis of the incision patterns on the other example suggest it might be of Benge or Ngombe origin. The other piece, published in Rare African Short Weapons (Zirngibl, 1983), was heavily incised on the front side only; this example is heavily corroded, but one small section of the wing still retains some of the original incising. According to Didier Carité who field collected this piece, it was discovered by a fisherman at the bottom of a river (Pers. communication, Luc Lefebvre, 2022).
