Because of the strong and far-reaching cultural influence the Mangbetu exerted upon their neighboring populations, this weapon type was widely distributed, and was known by many names in addition to nagata, including mambele, nagala, nambele, dupa, and trumbash.

Historically, Nagata blades were used in physical clashes between the Mangbetu and the Zande, but in the 20th century, they were used for peaceful purposes and were brandished during ceremonial dances. They were also used as insignias of dignity and given as diplomatic gifts. The fancy details and finish gave its bearer a certain distinction and enhanced his reputation and wealth (Schildkrout & Keim, African Reflections: Art From Northeastern Zaire, 1990; Vanderstraete, Monnaies Objets d’Échange, 2016).
