Oshun Cult Sword
Yoruba / Bini, Nigeria
Brass, wood
Early 20th century
This ornamental brass sword was likely used in the context of the Oshun cult, but could have also been used in rituals of related organizations such as the Ogun. It can be difficult to distinguish Yoruba weapons from those of the Bini due to the many cultural contacts and mutual influences that have existed between these two Nigerian cultures. Both the Yoruba and the Bini have produced outstanding pieces in casted brass, and both have borrowed heavily (in the way of decorative patterns) from northern cultures such as the Hausa (Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).
