Curved Sword
Ngombe / Doko / Ngbandi, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood
Early 20th century
This large curved sword comes from the Ngombe, Doko, and Ngbandi, but it was likely also found among other neighboring cultures. Elsen describes the type seen here, with an additional hook at the top of the blade as "rare specimens" (De Fer et de Fierté, 2003).
The area in northern D.R. Congo from which this type originates generally runs along the northern edge of the Congo Rainforest, spilling slightly into the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic. A wide variety of sickle weapons come from this area (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003).
