Ceremonial Janus Scepter
Baule, Ivory Coast
Wood, leather
Early 20th century
Like many Baule objects, this ceremonial scepter is adorned with a head in the classic Baule aesthetic; this example has two faces.
The Baule represent one of the most important cultures in the Ivory Coast. According to legend, Queen Aba Pokou led her people on an exodus towards the gold-mining areas during the 18th century. Baule artists had a great sense of stylization and attention to detail, and they produced some of the most elegant African art objects (Bacquart, The Tribal Arts of Africa, 1998).
