This rare loop axe was described in African axes as originating from an uncertain culture: Hausa, Fulbe, Nupe, or even more generally Benue or N. Nigeria (Widstrand, 1958). Widstrand describes how it was known as Gitaru amongst the Fulbe, which could have been Gatari among the Hausa.
