Curved Saber Blade
Yakoma / Sango, D.R. Congo / Central African Republic
Iron, wood
Late 19th / early 20th century
The Yakoma were the primary manufacturers of this functional sickle blade, which was used by the Ngbandi, Sango, Gbanziri, Mbugbu, Bongo, and Ndunga. It’s likely that some of these non-Yakoma cultures also manufactured these blades. The imperfect incising on this larger example suggests it was not manufactured by the Yakoma (Elsen, Tribal Arms Monographs, Vol 1/No. 1, 1996).
