Colossal Slot Axe
Possibly Wassindkja, Southern Tanzania
Wood, brass, bone
Late 19th / early 20th century
The slot axe (with the blade carried through the shaft) occurs throughout East Africa, from Lake Victoria to the Zambezi River. It can be difficult to assign these types to a specific region or culture. This piece likely originates from southern Tanzania, perhaps from the Wassindkja, who lived west of Lake Victoria and used long drawn-out parade axes similar to this piece (Widstrand, African Axes, 1954; Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
