Early 20th century
This distinctive sword served as an emblem of prestige for nobles, warriors, witch doctors, and the wealthy. They were often worn in a leather sheath with a shoulder strap, held under the arm. While primarily the prerogative of the Teke, they were also used by the Bembe, Hungaan, and Lari (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003; Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
