Axe with Trident Head
Acholi, Uganda
Wood, iron
Early 20th century
The first axe of this type to be collected was brought to Vienna by Rudolf Kmunke in 1913. He attributed it to the Acholi, living north of Lake Salisbury (Zirngibl, Rare African Short Weapons, 1983).
Writing about the variations in this axe type, Widstrand writes: Another type of slot-axe is found north of Lake Victoria and in the Nile-Congo watershed. The shaft-head of this type has two or more upward-pointing carved prongs, or incisions cut into the staff to suggest such prongs. The blade is usually carried through the head and furnished with a hole and a ring. Widstrand then listed 30 different cultures who utilized axes related to this type (African Axes, 1958).
