Short Sword with Large Iron Pommel
Tubu, Chad / Niger / Mali
Iron, leather, crocodile skin
Early 20th century
The unique pommel design seen here is found on blades of the Tubu. The small midrib of crocodile belly skin on the handle is often found in knives in the eastern regions of where the Tubu can be found (most notably Chad), and also on blades from other cultures in the Sudan.
This sword is unusual because it incorporates green-dyed leather in the handle; a subtle detail, but still exceedingly uncommon. The blade itself seems to be designed for stabbing only, as only the tip was sharpened and the center is raised and very solid. The incisions are extremely minute and delicate.
