Ceremonial Dagger with Copper Pommel
Nkutshu, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, copper
First half of the 20th century
While at one time they might have been functional objects, the elegant blades of the Nkutshu were apparently only used ceremonially, despite some having a bottom serrated edge and a weighted handle (like this piece).
Inspired by the large, flamboyant spear points of the Nkutshu, this type is an excellent representation of what Meyer describes as "combat weapons reserved for chieftains that evolved towards a more refined aesthetic treatment, and became instead objects of great
prestige" (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003; Meyer, Art and Craft in Africa, 2001).
