Pair of Serrated Spearheads
Kuba, DR Congo
Brass, copper
Late 19th / early 20th century
Spearheads of this type originated from the Kuba complex, which consisted of a federation of 20 Bantu peoples; the largest of these were the were the Bushoong, Ngeende, Kete, Shoowa, and Pyaang.
Serrated spearheads are exceedingly uncommon. They were reportedly the prerogative of high-ranking chiefs. Indeed, their composition in more expensive, softer metals would both render them much less functional, and also serve as potent visual symbols of the power and status of their owner (Wiethase, Bows, Arrows, and Spears of Africa, 2022).
