Nubian / Arab Arm Dagger
Sudan, Egypt
Iron, brass, leather, silver, crocodile skin
1907
An unusual dagger that conforms to Sudanese aesthetics in many ways, but then deviates strongly into Arabic styles. The Arabic script inscribed on the blade translates to "Omdurman 1325" on one side and "Khartoum 1907" on the other side. It could be a commemoration to the 1898 battle of Omdurman.
The inscription of Hijra dates and Gregorian dates in Arabic script can also be seen on items from Palestine, Egypt, and Sudan, which were all under British mandate (Pers communication, A. Yarom, Nov. 2020).
