Ikulimbaang Prestige Knife
Kuba (Bushoong), D.R. Congo
Brass, copper, wood
Early 20th century
This variety of the Ikulimbaang has a conical protuberance on its rounded pommel that is also seen on Kuba hatpins. This knife was reportedly introduced by King Shyaam aMbul aNgoong in the early 17th century as a symbol of peace. Whereas the common Ikul dagger could be possessed by any free adult male, it was the privilege of the noblemen among the Kuba to own a ceremonial knife of this type. While serving primarily as an emblem of rank, it was also brandished by men and women during ritual dances (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003; Spring, African Arms and Armor, 1993; Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).
