Prestige Scepter Inspired by a Throwing Knife
Ga'anda, Nigeria
Iron, copper alloy
Early 20th century
There is scant information about the meaning and function of this weapon type. Indeed, Zirngibl described various fruitless attempts to learn more about these pieces. Obviously styled after throwing knives, the best conclusion is that these were not used as weapons, but rather served as highly valued ritual objects. Indeed, their huge size makes them seem impractical for throwing (Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
Composed of local iron and heavily incised, this piece was adorned with six rivets in copper alloy.
