Woven Basketry Shield
Ngbandi / Yakoma / Mbugbu, D.R. Congo
Wood, rattan, pigment
Late 19th / early 20th century
This shield type was most often collected among the Ngbandi. Some examples have the pelt of a wild cat affixed over the center, and others have a protetive iron disc added to protect the handle. But while this one lacks those embellishments, it wears more geometric designs than most of its peers (Baur & Elsen, Guba: Wicker Shields from the Congo Basin, 2002).
