This type of shield was manufactured in East Africa and the Middle East, mainly in Oman and Zanzibar, but probably on a broader scale. Exported to Africa and beyond, it's distribution was widespread. It was used as a functional buckler and also in ritual battles (Barbier, Boyer, Benitez-Johannot, Shields: Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, 2000).
