This type of shield comes from one of the many Bantu cultures who live in the area between four great lakes: Victoria, Edward, Kivu, and Tanganyika. It was reportedly used for ceremonial and processional purposes (Barbier, Boyer, Benitez-Johannot, Shields: Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, 2000).
