Short Sword in Sheath
Bali / Kom / Bamenda, Cameroon
Iron, wood, rattan
Early 20th century
The handle of this short sword identifies it as originating from the Bali, Kom, Bamenda, or other related culture from the northwestern Cameroon Grasslands. The design of the sheath and grooved blade, however, are quite different from the typical Bali style. Unfortunately, there isn't much information about the original meaning or function of this blade. With a sturdy, sharpened blade and a sheath and handle that show considerable wear, this piece was likely designed to be a functional object, unlike many of the other swords of the Bali that seem to be symbols of rank or prestige.
