Short Sword with Scabbard
Buyu / Bangu-Bangu, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, cane, leather
Late 19th / early 20th century
The Buyu and Bangu-Bangu live between the Luama and Elila rivers, to the west of the Songye. The short swords that they carry have relatively heavy forged steel blades and wooden handles sometimes decorated with metal strips, tacks, or a solid counterweight. They were carried in two-panel wooden scabbards held together with cane and with a carrying loop made of leather (Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
