Mpuku Short Sword in Sheath
Salampasu, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, leather, vegetal fiber
Early 20th century
This type of short sword was found primarily among the Salampasu, but a closely-related blade (with variations) was found among the Kete. Originating from southwestern D.R. Congo, they were also reportedly found among the Dinga and Lwalwa. The sword was known as mpuku, and the sheath was known as cibunga cya mongo. It served as an integral part of the warrior’s masquerade costume, which was worn at boys’ initiation ceremonies. (Spring, African Arms and Armor, 1993; Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
