Long Sword in Sheath
Bida, Nigeria
Iron, brass, leather
Early 20th century
This long sword with its relatively simple forged iron blade, is equipped with a handle made of solid cast brass and a richly hallmarked sheath made of sheet brass. This sword was worn exclusively by the Bida, a large ethnic group in the Sokoto district of Nigeria. While a number of closely-related smaller arm daggers are known (and often attributed to the Hausa, Nupe, or Tuareg), I am not aware of another Bida long sword (Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
