Large Incised Razor luveko
Vavgusu / Kavirondo, Kenya / Tanzania
Iron
Late 19th / early 20th century
This distinctive razor blade was known as luveko, and was used for cutting hair, shaving, and incising the skin. Gerhard Lindblom, who collected a small number of them among the Vavgusu in Kenya, noted that the top end was bent into a loop through which a strap or chain was passed for carrying. Lindblom also collected related examples further south in Tanzania (African Razors, 1943).
