Asymmetrical Dagger in Sheath
Undetermined, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, leather
19th century
An unquestionably old object with a cultural attribution that is difficult to pin down. The sheath has an embossed leather square holding down a leather tab. The blade has a "man in the moon" motif, which originated in Germany in the 17th century, but doesn't necessarily indicate a specific place of origin (this motif was known to have been replicated in Africa). An old museum tag from the Musée du Congo (Namur) is attached. From the collection of Dr. Louis Laurent (1858-1905), Namur (whose name is also on the attached tag).
