Symbolic Currency Knife, Oshele
Ndengese, D.R. Congo
Iron, accumulation
19th century
The oshele primarily served symbolic purposes – an insignia of rank and a scepter of power – and being in the presence of one, its power is palpable. It is larger and heavier than any throwing knife from which its design was inspired, and its branches bulge with sharp points and graceful curves. The delicate tips and the careful proximity of the wing and crown show the extreme level of skill that went into its manufacture.
