The Bena Lulua (also known as Lulua) migrated from western Africa in the 18th century and settled in southern D.R. Congo. They number 300,000 and and live in small regional chiefdoms. Their village chief ensures juridicial, political, and social cohesion (Bacquart, The Tribal Arts of Africa, 1998).
This elaborately decorated short sword would have been a formidable item of prestige amongst the Bena Lulua.
