Ceremonial Short Sword Mopamba
Ngombe/Poto, D.R. Congo
Forged iron, wood, bronze/brass, leopard pelt
First half of the 20th century
Long to have been considered the most formidable blacksmiths in the area, the influence of the Poto and Ngombe tribes' metalwork and innovative design spread to many of their neighbors. Swords with a heavy influence from these two related groups can be found among the Doko, Mbudja, Ngbaka, Mongo, Bangala, Yakoma, and the Ngbandi (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003).
The condition of the leopard pelt is impressive, given that most examples have shed their fur. Typically, the bundle covering the handle would also be stuffed with medicinal or magical herbs (Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).
Field collected in 1960.
