Court Sword
Mongo complex; Ngandu / Saka, D.R. Congo
Forged iron, wood, copper wrap, iron staple and rivets
Early 20th century
South of the Nzakara, on both sides of the upper Ubangi River, are the Banza, Gobu, and Banziri tribes, who manufacture knives of this type. Primarily symbols of prestige but reportedly also used for fighting as well, these knives could be found in the possession of every adult male among the Saka and their neighbors, the Kota and Kutu. The handles were usually decorated with sheet copper and brass hobnails (Elsen, Beaute Fatale, 1992; Fisher, Afrikanische Waffen, 1979; Westerdijk, African Metal Implements, 1984).
