Inauthentic Fishtail Knife
In the style of the Kota, Gabon
Iron, wood, brass
This knife type, often called the Kota “fishtail” is a variation on the famous Kota “bird head” knife, which is a highly sought after design. The Musée du Quai Branly has in its permanent collection an example that exhibits characteristics of both the bird head and the fishtail, and could very well be a hybrid example (here).
Unlike traditional Kota blades, these fishtail blades tend to be manufactured with thick steel that has deep incisions. I believe this deviation from tradition suggests a later date of manufature, possibly as early as the 1950s.
