Decorated Male Figure
Koma, Northern Ghana
Terracotta
13th - 19th century
The archaeological site of Koma in northern Ghana was discovered in 1985. The Komaland culture centers around this site, where archaeologists found numerous tumuli dating from around the 16th century. Most of the terracotta items (produced by a culture about which very little is known) are manneristically conceived: heads hollowed like a mug or entirely pointed, eyes like spectacles, and other features abstracted and exaggerated (Bacquart, Jean-Baptiste, The Tribal Arts of Africa, 2002; Schaedler, Karl-Ferdinand. Earth and Ore: 2500 Years of African Art in Terra-Cotta and Metal,1997).
