Telek Arm Dagger
Tuareg, Mali / Algeria / Niger
Iron, brass, leather
Early 20th century
The proud Tuareg ethnic group lives in the areas of southern Algeria, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Similar to the swords of the Fulbe warriors, those of the Tuareg also have traditional geometric decorations on the sword and the sheath. The designs of Tuareg daggers such as this piece was generally similar to that of the larger Takouba swords. These daggers were typically worn on the left forearm by means of a strong leather ring that was firmly attached to the scabbard. The cross-shaped handle would point towards the wrist (Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).
