Symmetrical Discoid Knife, makoko
Dzing / Mbuun / Yanzi / Ngul / Lwer, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Iron, wood, brass
19th century
The blacksmiths of the Mbuun and Dzing were skilled in producing knives that were flamboyant, distorted, and quite beautiful. Research suggests that these were used ceremonially, as prestige symbols and by medicine men. Additional information about their meaning and function is unfortunately scant (Berardi, Standing on Ceremony, 2004; Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003).
