Short Sword with Horn Handle
Ingessana, Sudan
Iron, antelope
Early 20th century
The Ingessana number 20,000 and live in the Tabi hills in the Dar Fung province of Sudan. Their language is also called Tabi. They primarily used throwing clubs and lances as hunting implements and weapons of war. Interestingly, they also manufactured two iron types of throwing knives, but those were not used in any functional capacity (Westerdijk, The African Throwing Knife, 1988).
Like the Ingessana’s throwing knives, the function of this blade was probably entirely symbolic or ceremonial.
