Sabre Knife in Scabbard, Flissa
Kabyle (Berber), Algeria
Iron, wood, brass, tin
20th century
The Flissa was the traditional weapon of the Kabyle Berbers of Northern Algeria. Flissa swords are technically sabre knives, as they have a curved blade and one cutting edge with a thick back. Unlike other North African swords such as the Moroccan Nimcha, the Tuareg Takouba, or the Sudanese Kaskara, many of which are fitted with heirloom blades of European manufacture, the blades of the Kabyle Flissa are without exception of local manufacture (Spring, African Arms and Armor, 1993).
