Long Sword with European Blade and African Handle
Toussian, Burkina Faso
Iron, brass
Early 20th century
This sword is likely an excavated piece from the Toussian people who inhabit southwestern Burkina Faso. Several related objects were also attributed to the neighboring Goin. The totemic animal depicted on the hilt – a chameleon or bird – is common among several cultures in the region (Elsen, De fer et de fierté, 2003).
