Grooved Short Sword
Ngbaka Mabo / Nzombo, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, copper
Early 20th century
This symmetrical short sword was likely displayed as a symbol of prestige among a number of cultural groups inhabiting the Lower Ubangi Region in Northwestern D.R. Congo. The blacksmiths of the Ngbaka Mabo and Nzombo were by far the most important producers of their distinctive throwing knives. The Nzombo are one of a number of cultures associated with the Ngbaka such as the Ngbaka Mabo and Gbanziri-Buraka (Westerdijk, The African Throwing Knife, 1988).
