Dagger in Sheath, Sapi
Mangbetu Kingdoms, D.R. Congo
Iron, wood, leather, copper, brass
Early 20th century
Mangbetu Sapi daggers aren’t particularly obscure, but this specific type is an older and rarer variation distinguished by the large disc carved in wood on the butt of the handle. Because this type differs so significantly from the standard Sapi design, it is often labeled as originating from the Mangbetu Empire or the Mangbetu Kingdom rather than simply "Mangbetu," suggesting it came from an area of Mangbetu influence, yet outside of the core.
