The Mandingo are an ancient culture spread across West Africa, from Guinea to Niger. A migratory Islamic culture, they are famous for their ornate leatherwork, seen here. Their blades are simple and symmetrical, yet executed with precision (Spring, African Arms and Armor, 1993; Tirri, Islamic and Native Weapons of Colonial Africa, 2007; Zirngibl & Kubetz, Panga Na Visu, 2009).

The vintage manufacturer's stamp reading CAST STEEL SHEFFIELD indicates that this blade was forged in Sheffield, England, a historic hub for steel and cutlery production during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is not possible to identify a specific maker from this mark as CAST STEEL SHEFFIELD was a generic material and origin stamp rather than a brand name. It was used by hundreds of independent blacksmiths, factories, and cutlers in the region to guarantee that the tool was made from high-quality crucible steel.
